Patricia Ann “Patty” Cartmell was born in Ohio on 7/31/1929. Patricia was married to Walter Cartmell and had 2 children, Michael, and Trisha (aka Patricia), and adopted a third child; Tyrone James Cartmell (aka Tryinia Tyrone Williams). Patty worked at one of the town’s answering services in Ukiah, allowing her access to all ambulance calls in town, and hundreds of patients’ information through doctors’ calls (Raven, Reiterman, Pg. 151). Patricia was an active church member and was part of the planning committee and was in the “inner core”. Patricia is noted as a “Jones’s defender” on page 93 of Raven by Tim Reiterman.
In the early 1970s, Cartmell’s true position in the Temple was revealed. Cartmell was the head of the “staff” (top of member hierarchy) which was a select group that took sensitive missions for Jones (Raven, Reiterman, Pg.157). Page 159 of Raven by Tim Reiterman tells a story about Cartmell stating she was taken into custody after being found on an intelligence mission for a Jones healing. Patty disguised herself as a black woman and was released after telling police she was going to her black boyfriend’s house.
It was reported by Patty Cartmell’s son Mike that Patty and Sharon Amos were known as fact finders and relayed information to Jim Jones that was used in performative healings.

After finding Jones in 1959, Cartmell joined Jones and became his Ohio secretary. furthering this close relationship Patricia was also responsible for arranging Jim’s sexual advancements prior to the move to Guyana in 1977. On page 196 of Raven by Tim Reiterman, it is noted that Patty Cartmell was known as Jones’s “fucking secretary” because she would record the names of Jim’s sexual partners in a slender black notebook.
