Carolyn Layton

Carolyn Layton was a long-time member of Peoples Temple and was one of Jones’ closest counterparts in Jonestown. Additionally, she was the sister of Rebecca Moore, the organizer behind the Jonestown Institute. Layton was known as his right-hand man and thus a “zone of silence” would be around her as people knew anything she heard would be reported directly to Jones. She initially was married to Larry Layton, but Jones took a quick interest in Carolyn and they were lovers. Larry and Carolyn soon divorced and Jones and Carolyn grew closer. She was a high school teacher who taught French and girls PE while still in the United States. She eventually fell pregnant with Jones’ child, leading to her being sent away from the temple for a short period while she carried the child. During this time, a marriage between Mike Prokes, another Peoples Temple member, was arranged so that the child, Jim Jon (Kimo) Prokes, would be considered legitimate as Prokes’ child and the true identity of his father, Jim Jones, would not be revealed. This would be because at this time, Jones was actively preaching against having sexual relations as it would take members away from the greater cause.
